Thursday Thunder: Carina Behrens

Carina Behrens interview

‘It is good to see that you don’t have to be a size zero anymore to find a place in the fashion industry’

It’s been a while but Thursday Thunder is back! This is my way of applauding women I find inspiring. This week the gorgeous Carina Behrens shares her thoughts on confidence and curves. She lives in Germany and has been modeling for 4,5 years now. The last two years she’s been working fulltime as a model. We’ve worked together a couple of times and she’s an absolute sweetheart.

“Since I’ve always been a bit bigger than my friends I started to learn to love my body shape the way it is quite early. I have never been really insecure, but to be honest the real security came with time. I believe it is a process that every woman – no matter what size or shape- has to go through. I must admit that modeling and being involved in the whole plus size industry helped me a lot. Working with such gorgeous curvy women and following the whole movement with all the stylish bloggers helped me boost my confidence even more. It is good to see that you don’t have to be a size zero anymore to find a place in the fashion industry. I really do not mind being called a plus size model. I am not a fan of labels, but if people feel the need to call me that way I really do not care because I know who I am and that is all that matters.”

‘I had to give my body what it needed’

“Quite a while ago I started to feel a bit insecure about my body. It is a hard industry and being one of the bigger models in the market hasn’t been easy. With a size 16/18 it was never that easy to get clients and book good jobs so I always felt the need to lose weight. Not to feel better about myself but for work. Since I am a model I have to be a certain size to be able to work regularly. Trying to lose weight never really worked out. It just stressed me out and made me feel I wasn’t strong enough or I didn’t want it enough. It is hard to explain but even though I actually worked regularly as a model, I wanted more. When I didn’t worry about that anymore and started to try to be the best and healthiest version of myself, it just clicked. I had to give my body what it needed. I am not really dieting or torturing myself. Even though I am still a size 18 I feel so much stronger and more confident now that I am listening to my bodies needs.”

‘Even when you’re not happy with yourself you need confidence to admit that, and the power and selflove to change it’

“Knowing who you really are and knowing what you want is true confidence. And also; loving everything that makes you ‘you’. Even when you’re not happy with yourself you need confidence to admit that, and the power and selflove to change it. We all have days that we don’t feel that great. I used to stay in bed and feel the same for the rest of the day. At some point I realized that it actually wasn’t the best choice. So these days I rather go to the gym and have a good workout when I don’t feel quite well. It makes me feel strong and happy. Or I just go outside and take a walk and breathe in some fresh air. I enjoy the sun when it shines, or the drops of rain on my skin when it rains. Life is definitely too short and precious to feel down.”

‘Having someone in your life who steals your inner sparkle and your smile is just not acceptable. Nobody and nothing is worth that much’

“I always try to look at life with a smile. Generally I would consider myself a happy girl. I sometimes have to remind myself how lucky I actually am. We always want so much in life that we sometimes forget that it’s the little things that make us actually happy and touch our hearts. There is so much in life I have to be grateful for so I am happy about everyday I am able to do what I love and have the people I love happy and healthy. Besides that you should dream as big as you can, if you want it you can do and be anything you’d like to be. Protecting your happiness is so important. I try not to let everything get to me that much anymore. I used to be so sad about every job I didn’t get and wondered why it just didn’t work out. You just have to let it go because it is always usually so much bigger than you. Also, just surround yourself with people who make you happy, make you smile and feel loved. Having someone in your life who steals your inner sparkle and your smile is just not acceptable. Nobody and nothing is worth that much.”

‘I am a big supporter of the whole ‘beauty comes from within’ idea’

“I admire people who bring out the best in you. It can be anyone I meet or talk to. I am inspired my so many human beings on this planet it is hard to name one. It could be my best friend who manages to be a plusmodel and mother of two at the same time. It could be my friend Ali; her heart shines brighter than any star. It could be a bunch of top plus size models who make it not only their business to sell clothes but also to help girls and women to be confident and grow. It could even be the gorgeous Mayra who is a talented writer and started this amazing blog and also has a pretty amazing butt. (Whahaha, thanks Carina. My butt says ‘thank you’ too’) It could also be the cashier at my local supermarket who always smiles at me and is the friendliest ever no matter how long the line and how rude some customers are. It could be anyone. I am a big supporter of the whole ‘beauty comes from within’ idea. I think there is barely anything more true than this. If you’re not a good person you can be pretty on the outside but you’ll never be beautiful. I am talking about that weird light inside yourself, it shines when you are happy, confident and strong and it makes you beautiful on the outside.”
